Veterans Day Parade returns to Historic Downtown Thomasville- The City of Thomasville Main Street and Tourism offices are excited to partner with local Veterans groups to host the 2016 Veterans Day Parade. The parade will be held on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11th at 6:00 pm on the historic brick-paved streets of downtown Thomasville, Georgia. The community is encouraged to attend the parade to celebrate the men and women who have served in our U.S. military.
Veterans Day officially became a national holiday in 1938; it’s a day to show respect and gratitude to those who were willing to serve our country. “The City of Thomasville fully supports our local Veterans groups and we encourage others to take time on Veterans Day to stop and thank a Veteran for their service,” says Bonnie Hayes, Tourism Director. “The parade is an acknowledgment of the indebtedness we have to our veterans, as well as a celebration of appreciation; it’s an honor to be involved in an event like this.”
The Main Street and Tourism offices are calling on local groups affiliated with military service members to walk or ride in the parade. Other community organizations that wish to participate are also encourage to enter the parade. Parade entry information is available online at www.downtownthomasville.com or by calling the Visitors Center at (229) 228-7977.
In addition to the Veterans parade, local Veterans groups will host a ceremony on Veterans Day at 11:11 am at the historic courthouse on Broad Street. The time is a nod to the official proclamation that Veterans Day would officially be celebrated on November 11th. “Our local VFW groups have traditionally met on this date, but this year the City of Thomasville is proud to unveil its public support for recipients of the Purple Heart Award at the ceremony”, says Hayes.
Prior to the parade, the Main Street office will be giving out hand-size American flags. Those watching the parade should bring a lawn chair or a blanket. The parade route will begin on North Broad Street near First Baptist Church and proceed on Broad Street to Smith Avenue, disbanding on Crawford Street.
