Let’s face it, we’ve all made the New Year’s Resolution to eat healthier and shed a few pounds only to break it a week later after passing by our favorite drive-thru a few too many times. The voyage to weight loss can be tricky, especially when maneuvering around the tubs of ice cream icebergs and venturing through the isle of aerobics. This year, make the journey to your goal weight a little easier by joining Team Lean: a ten week long program designed to motivate and help participants stay accountable for their weight loss.
Sponsored by the Thomasville YMCA, Nature’s Own, Archbold Medical Center, Barberitos and the Thomasville Times-Enterprise, the community wide weight loss challenge was originally created as a community effort to support health seekers and provide a team-based approach to weight loss. The program has definitely proven its effectiveness since 2008 with a total of 7,839 pounds being shed between participants!
“Losing weight is easier if you have the support of a team,” says Tom Everett, CEO of the Thomasville YMCA. Everett states, “Team Lean has been able to bring together people – families, co-workers, friends – who provide support and accountability to each other throughout the program. If there’s one element that makes the program successful it’s the motivation you get from having a team behind you.”
So, how does the program work exactly? Team Lean participants can enter as an individual or part of a team of at least four, but no more than five members. The fitness and nutrition program used is completely up to the individual, however the YMCA does support Team Leaners through free exercise classes and nutrition education. Participants will then meet every Thursday from January – March for a weigh-in at official Team Lean weigh in sites around the community, including Grady County and Mitchell County. If improving your health isn’t enough incentive for you, Team Lean also offers weekly cash prizes, all of which are derived from the money collected through entry fees and the $1 penalty fee for gaining a pound.
In order to win the cash, you must be one of the biggest losers in one of three categories: top male, top female, and top team. Plus, Archbold Medical Center will offer free health screenings at the first and last weigh-ins. The two individuals (Male & Female) with the largest decrease in cholesterol numbers (by percentage) from the beginning of the program to the end of the program will each receive a $500.00 cash prize! Upon completion of the ten week challenge, those that lose the highest percentage of weight will be eligible for an even larger cash prize!
Keep your New Year’s Resolution intact and those extra pounds off by signing up for Team Lean. Sign up for early registration by December 31st and receive a $10 discount. The deadline to register is January 14th at the Thomasville YMCA.
